Την περασμένη Τετάρτη, 30 Νοεμβρίου, έδωσα μια ομιλία στο Πρόγραμμα Μεταπτυχιακών Σπουδών «Μεταφραστικές Σπουδές και Διερμηνεία» του Εθνικού και Καποδιστριακού Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών (Τμήμα Αγγλικής Γλώσσας και Φιλολογίας), ύστερα από πρόσκληση του καθηγητή Νίκου Λαβίδα. Το θέμα ήταν Η μετάφραση στο Ευρωπαϊκό Κοινοβούλιο.
Θα δημοσιευσω εδώ το κείμενο της ομιλίας μου. Σας προειδοποιώ όμως ότι έχω δώσει κι άλλες φορές διάλεξη με το ίδιο θέμα, κι έτσι τα όσα θα διαβάσετε μπορεί να τα έχετε διαβάσει ξανά, παρόλο που κάποια επικαιροποίηση την έχω κάνει. Επίσης, πρόσθεσα κάποια ενδιαφέροντα σημεία που τα είπα εκτός κειμένου. Στην αρχή είχα σκεφτεί να απομαγνητοφωνήσω και τις απαντήσεις που έδωσα σε ερωτήσεις, στο τέλος της συζήτησης, αλλά ήδη το άρθρο έχει φτάσει τις 5000 λέξεις οπότε δεν θέλησα να το βαρύνω κι άλλο.

I totally agree, yes, it surely is, and it needs guts, lots of guts and love for the profession, the language and linguistics generally and specifically! But there’s also the fact that Brussels’ salary for translators with a good thesis is around… 8.000 euros per month, don’t forget about this too! This is some of a huge incentive! Best regards.

Yeah, me too at first.. but when we watched the TV show about 5 or 6 years ago regarding the high salaries of our expatriate scientists and linguists abroad, it was then we’ve realized that our friend was one of the highly paid among Brussels’ staff; he deserves it after all, but this is how much Brussels’ good translators and holders of PhD get paid and this is verified from other linguists too. Thank you! Well, there is a career change that I have left too long to make! 😉 I really would have thought a chemical engineer would have been the higher paid occupation.
